Can machines be taught to see, hear, speak? What is lost? What might be found? These questions coil in the roots of this exhibition by artists Christiana Caro and Kimberly Lyle. Caro was employed by Google to teach an intelligent camera about seeing. Lyle is reimagining old technology designed to gather auditory sensory data and question the logic within these systems. Both reflect on the interface of the body with technology to imagine forms that might allow us to uncover other ways of knowing.
Watch an interview with the artists.

Exhibition Dates: May 20 - June 17, 2022
Opening Reception: Friday, May 20, 5 to 8 pm

Undercurrents brings together the work of ten international artists that explore the human condition in the midst of climate change. The featured artworks shift from photographs of disrupted, flooded landscapes to films exploring our emotional, physical, and political ties to the natural world. Artists Jennifer Boles, Georgie Brinkman, Christiana Caro, Laura Gines, Karissa Hahn, Amanda Hodes, Kayla Parker & Stuart Moore, Leah Sandler, and Krista Leigh Steinke, create work that is cognizant of both the personal and public, historically aware as much as forward-thinking, all together urging us to understand our sense of community as inclusive the natural world.

What We Don’t See
Solo Exhibition and Published Booklet
Greenleaf Gallery, Whittier College
Closing Reception Thursday, October 10, 5;30-7 pm, with Guest Speaker Ross Goodwin
Exhibition Dates: September 2 - October 11, 2019
13406 E. Philadelphia Street, Whittier, CA 90608
What We Don’t See on Circulation Exchange (including printable PDF of the booklet)
In "What We Don’t See," Seattle-based artist Christiana Caro addresses themes of vision, observation, and the collaborative potential of human creativity and machine intelligence. The exhibition includes Caro’s recent work made in Sardinia, one of the sites of the International Latitude Observatories, a group of six now-defunct observatories (also located in California, Italy, Maryland, Turkmenistan, Ohio, and Japan) that once measured the earth’s wobble on its axis from the same point of latitude. Caro’s photographs depict the observatory and its surroundings, collectively reflecting on the relationship of scientific measurement and technological progress to our fundamental modes of viewing and observing the world.
While in Sardinia, Caro also used the recently-developed Clips camera, an artificial intelligence camera she worked to “train” as part of the research and machine intelligence team at Google. Caro has said, “Clips is an intelligent camera that I was hired by Google to teach about seeing. I was instructed to fill it with my own expert, aesthetic bias, and what I deemed as meaningful within a stream of recorded moments. This is good, this is not. Yes, no, yes, no.”
The Clips images are printed with an extended interview with Whittier faculty member Kate Palmer Albers, based on a series of conversations they had on the relationship of Caro’s creative work to her experience developing Clips at Google.

Alternatives
Ohio University Seigfred Art Gallery
Opening Thursday, January 31, 6-9pm
Exhibition Dates: Jan 31- March 2 2019
536 Seigfred Hall, Athens, Ohio
Contemporary photography is embracing modes of production that move the print off the wall and into 3-D and 4-D realms, exemplified in part by a return to historical processes. Photography like this distinguishes itself from retinal, transmittable media by calling attention to its own materiality, its presence, its singularity and its unique identity as both image and object. A photograph may exist in relation to other objects, to its own display apparatus, to the space in which it lives; it may or may not have a stable position in time. This exhibition looks to the contemporary practices of artists as photographers who are engaged with object-based production to engage in the ideas of reproduction implicit in the medium. In conjunction with the exhibition, a series of events will be presented as part of the opening festivities including a lecture by juror Brittany Nelson.
2,3,4: Dimensional Photographies will be a presentation of Alternatives, a biennial juried exhibition organized by Ohio University’s MFA Photography + Integrated Media graduate candidates. Since its beginning in 1980, Alternatives has achieved national recognition for its leadership in forging new definitions in the medium by emphasizing the work of photographers in the conceptual forefront of the practice. The Alternatives Biennial is funded by the legacies of Clarence White—founder of the historically renowned Clarence White School of Photography in New York—and his son, Clarence White Jr., who re-established the school at Ohio University in 1948, creating the first degree-granting program in photography at a major university in the country.

Gem Center for the Arts
Opening Thursday, January 17, 6-9pm
Exhibition Dates: Jan 17- Feb 24 2019
2417 Bank Dr, Boise, Idaho
This exhibition brings together work by seven artists, three from Slovakia who lived and practiced in Tucson, Arizona, and four from the U.S. who lived and practiced in Bratislava. Created across a continental and political divide over a period of seven years (2009-2016), the featured work highlights nuances of human experience in unfamiliar landscapes. The tie that binds these distinct geographies is one of fluctuating boundaries. Through photographs, video, performance, and installation, the body seeks refuge and connection in the landscape, with instinct and ritual; with vulnerability and strength; with a hesitation that acknowledges the power of marked borders and the inescapable lineage of renegotiated soil. Displaced bodies: our land – their land, our body – their body. The effects of these shifting lines challenge notions of identity and our translation of histories, our own and others. Approaching place from varied perspectives, and through lenses of subjective experience, these areas of overlap speak to geographic displacement, cycles of change, and iterations of self.
Featuring artists: Nidaa Aboulhosn, Clare Benson, Christiana Caro, Emma High, Anna Horčinová, Jakub Jančo, and Peter Snadik. The artists’ respective work in each location was facilitated through a graduate exchange program at the University of Arizona, as well as Caro’s continued research funded by the Fulbright Commission in the Slovak Republic and coinciding pop-up exhibition project, Clutch Gallery, located in Bratislava.
